The
following are letters of a young man’s rise ( بالا آمدن ) from struggle ( تقلا ) to strength
while living in the worst hit city of a war that began in 2014.
Letter 1:
Day
and night our city is fired on by heavy weapons. In the past 3
weeks, the longest time without bombs lasted 4 hours. It's almost 3 in the
morning now. About an hour ago, rockets rained down
on us. It takes only 4 seconds to fire about 30 missiles. From the
sounds of the guns we have learned what kind are being fired,
their position and where they will hit. I did not think I would
ever own such a skill.
A few days ago was the last chance to enter or leave the city. There
are constant
problems with electricity, water and
gas. Private transportation ( حمل و نقل خصوصی ) is now forbidden ( ممنوع ) and there is a curfew
( مقررات حکومت نظامی وخاموشی در ساعت معین شب ).
The stores are all closed. All my friends left. I have only 1 friend here now and my relatives who
cannot, or do not want to leave. At one point I did leave, but I returned. I could not be in another city as long as my parents remain here. I had to return.
Letter 4, three months later:
There is truth in the words, “You cannot run away from life.” If you have faith ( ایمان ), can you at the same time shake with fear
( از ترس میلرزید ) at even this madness ( جنون )?
I mean literally ( به معنای واقعی کلمه ) trusting yourself to God. I do not presume (فرض کردن) to convince ( برای متقاعد کردن ) anyone of this. But with this thought I’ve begun to live.
I’ve even begun to put to good use
this time. There is now endless time for reading and reflection ( بازتاب ) on your place in the world. I’ve read many, many books.
I don't want this time to have been in vain
( بیهوده ). I have learned something from every stone in the yard, from every
object in the house.
Letter 5:
Today
I went to work at the library. We are starting to clean up the rubble ( قلوه سنگ )
and trash. On the third floor everything is destroyed. But we will restore ( بازگرداندن ) everything
with time. As we were working a reader arrived! Amazing.
Yesterday they turned on the electricity! It is so wonderful! A person can rejoice
( به شادی ) in a light bulb ( لامپ روشنایی )!
